“If you believe in the Holy Spirit, Africa Can be Saved”by Pastor Jeff Today was an incredible day (Tuesday 5.29.07). We began by visiting Lonely Park Clinic - one of the few medical outposts in the area. The conditions were basic, to say the least. The director, Sister Rebekah (not a nun, but nurses here are called sisters) shared that due to the cold wave last week a young mother in the village lost her twin newborns to hypothermia - within hours of being born in a home with no heat, no water, and a concrete slab floor. Then, we moved on to playing with a wonderful group of preschool children, and from there, to Areaganeng school where 688 (yes, 688!) kids greeted us with song, traditional African dance, and beautiful music. PS: The school staff consists of only 13 teachers. As I looked across many faces, I saw smiles but also despair. The principal, Martha Mbipha,l shared that she enjoyed our visit because when people know about their “situation” it does not seem hopeless.
Principal Mbipha As we have visited AIDS patients, seen absolute poverty, and the overwhelming lack of education, teachers and educators like these are on the front lines. They are trying. But there is so much to overcome. The children sang a song to us “If you believe in the Holy Spirit, then Africa Can be Saved”. In response, one can only say, “let it be so”, which also translates, “Amen.” Another special song they sang for us ...
